A little room for improvement
The brief from our client was to provide additional storage, as well as a useable work area within the main living area of the house
In addition to this, the client requested that the new units match the existing storage within the home.
After an initial consultation and design meeting, it was decided that the units should include a breakfront. The reasoning behind this was that the units would very much resemble wardrobes if they were left a uniform depth.
Additionally, a usable pull out keyboard shelf and file storage were to be included. The client also decided that lighting should be used to illuminate the work space.
The existing doors were accurately measured and these were incorporated precisely on the new units to ensure uniformity.
In order to soften the edges of the unit, which measured 2.6 metres in length and 2.3 metres in height, a bow front desktop was used. This subtle design feature also mirrored the top of the unit, as well as the shape of the radiator covers that had also been made to match.
The client was unsure of the style or design of the radiator covers they wanted, so several designs were provided.
It was decided that a “slit front” radiator cover would be used and the curved front would be incorporated in the whole cover, as opposed to just the top shelf, which gives a much softer edge, as radiator covers can often look “bulky”
A handmade A4 folder storage drawer was constructed on ball bearing runners, as well as a pull-out drawer for the keyboard and storage. This was also on ball bearing runners, to ensure smooth operation.
All doors were fitted using soft close hinges and a flat screen monitor was fitted to the wall.
In addition to this, a very simple cable cover was provided which matched the wall colour, this ensured that the clean lines of the unit could be continued, seamlessly. The cover is also removable, should any additional equipment be required.
The final result has given the client a large amount of additional storage, as well as a very practical but stylish useable work space which blends seamlessly into the existing units.
